To chime in on the issue of maternal alcohol intake, I
do not like to use the terms "occasional" or "a
couple" when talking to moms...for some folks,
"occasional" is taken to mean *daily* and "a couple"
means *three or four*! Some folks take the ball and
run with it, ya know?
Based on what I have read, I tell parents the
following: 1) alcohol DOES pass into breast milk in
small amounts; 2) the amount ingested by breastfeeding
infants has *not been proven* to be a threat to the
health and well-being of *normal, full-term, healthy*
infants; 3) have *ONE drink a week, or less*, if you
like...you want a beer or a glass of wine or a mixed
drink, fine, just STOP after ONE.
No need to live like an ascetic while breastfeeding!
(from Webster's: ascetic (adj.)... 2. anyone who
lives with strict self-discipline and without the
usual pleasures and comforts)
Cheers!
Carole
