I have received a very indirect request (it went through 4 other
people before it was passed to me) from someone working in Papua New
Guinea. I am including the key points below. Does anyone know of
anything available from for example UNICEF or WHO in the form of
picture books or very low literacy level pamphlets that helps
counter the "colostrum is bad milk" view?
Also, does anyone know of any LCs in that region that would be
willing to ehlp this individual find appropriate resources?
(I know some of the terminology isn't correct, but you can get what
the writer is driving at.)

Winnie

"the woman here when they have a
baby think that their first milk (the colostrums) isn't real milk
and if the
baby drinks it they will starve to death. So they have a lady who
is
already nursing come and nurse their baby for them until their
"real" milk
comes in. What we would like to do is do a picture book somehow of
showing
that the first milk is good and has medicine in it, and the baby
wont starve
by drinking it. The problem here is that newborns get sick a lot
faster
from not having the antibiotics from the first milk and the mom that
is
brought to nurse her or her baby usually has a cold or is sick so
germs are
passed from one baby sucking to the newborn. Do you think you could
draw
something up to explain that a mom's first milk is good? I was
thinking of
pictures like the mom giving birth and then right away showing her
nursing
the baby and maybe draw a medicine bottle pointing to the breast.
Those
were just a couple ideas we had. Once we get it then we can fill in
some of
their language to go with the pictures but right now we are still
trying to
get words for that. We would also like to use it as a primer book
for when
teaching literacy. The big problem is that this is going to go
against
their every being and will be really hard to show them and have them

believe, it is so ingrained into their culture and there are a ton
of other
things that goes along with the substitute mom breast feeding, etc.
But if
we can get you to draw it up, it will be more medically said instead
of us
trying to explain it and I think it might help:-) "
