I do not have the references here at home but will try to track them down at
work.
Uric crystals are normal in the first 2-4 days of life.  The kidneys are
concentrating the urine and the by product are the uric crystals, which look
like brick dust in the diaper.
After day 5 of life, when the mother has a larger milk supply these uric
crystals should no longer be present and if they are at this point then you
are looking at signs of inadequate intake.  The problem at day 5 is that baby
girls could still be having the fake menses and boys with recent
circumcisions make it difficult to identify the uric crystals.  This is why I
tell them about other signs of dehydration and not to rely on just one
observation.
