Naomi said,
"How much does the list of benefits help convince husbands, fathers-
in-law and grandmothers? How much is this an emotional issue for
them as well?"

Precisely. I have known several women who wanted to or would have tried breastfeeding, but failed or didn't try because of the extremely negative feelings of their husband or mother-in-law or mother or other family member. This includes the woman who took me to my first LLL meeting 26 years ago
(little did she know!). She quit after a few weeks because of the constant negative pressure from her husband! One of the peds here is currently pregnant with her first and planning on breastfeeding, but she already talks about the negative things her mother-in-law and mother say to her. As much
as she is able to speak her own mind, she admits it's much harder when it's your family telling you these things! That phenomenon works in reverse as well. If families can talk a mom out of breastfeeding, they can certainly talk them into it as well! Yes, changing the culture would have many
different effects. Right now, in the US, we are convincing moms of the benefits of breastmilk for their babies, the next thing to work on is the benefits of breastfeeding!

Marsha, in the deep freeze in Alaska, oops I mean Indiana!
