EMLA cream is a topical anesthetic (lidocaine & prilocaine) combination.
It must be in place for a hour to take effect, peaks within 2-3 hours &
last 1-2 hours after cream is removed. Often less time with a neonate. In
the hospital we apply to the skin & use a tegaderm to keep in contact with
skin & so won't rub off. Once removed the skin will appear to look
blanched.
