In my experience, moms who are already committed to ecological
breastfeeding use LAM and have good results.  These women are often very
aware of their health and bodies and reluctant to use hormonal forms of
birth control, so they are very open to LAM as a natural bonus of
ecological mothering.  However, most mothers I have contact with are of
the stretch-a-feeding-as-long-as-you-can school of thought, and they
believe, quite correctly in their cases, that breastfeeding is not a
reliable form of birth control, because they get their fertility back
very quickly.
