Hi Julie,
Try having mom breastfeed from one breast at a feeding, and if she is
already doing that, have her try breastfeeding twice from one breast
before switching to the other. This will increase the amount of milk
fat the baby gets, and is often enough to stop intestinal bleeding.
If that does not work within a few days, then she can try an elimination
diet. As long as the baby is well (growing, happy, not anemic) there is
no immediate danger, and no reason to take him off the breast. If he
were failing to thrive, then more drastic action may be necessary, but
that is not the case here.
