Nancy,
For your mom with very large breasts and areolae, and
flat nipples (eeeek), I would keep working with the
shield, inverting it before putting it on...this seems
to create a mild vacuum effect and helps keep it in
place better.
I like putting a small cushion under a large or
pendulous breast; this elevates the breast and allows
the mother a much better view of the nipple and
areola, to help with latch. A rolled receiving
blanket or hand towel usually does the trick. You
didn't mention if you had tried this, so thought I'd
chime in!
