<It is a good thing to teach parents infant cues, encourage them to meet
their baby's needs, and teach them some basic soothing methods for when
baby is overstimulated. But I have found some reason (usually feeding
related, either over or underfeeding) every time I've been asked to see
a "colicky" baby. And addressing the feeding problem solved the colic,
very quickly.>
Dear Genna,
I am happy you have found dietary change so helpful with the colicky
babies you help, however, when diet change has been scientifically
studied it is quite clear that it helps only 10-20% of colicky babies.
That is why I hate to make a nursing mom immediately suspicious of her
milk or that her baby has a problem.
Also, I would like to inform Lacnetters about another facet of my work
which is to revise this idea that babies cry because they are over
stimulated. Of course, babies can cry because they are overstimulated,
however a much bigger reason for their crying is that they are
UNDER-STIMULATED!!
Our idea of putting babies in a quiet room without movement is sensory
depriving for young infants! That's why rocking, slings, holding and
white noise (remember the sound in the uterus is louder than a vacuum
cleaner...24/7) are so effective at soothing babies, keeping them
organized and turning on their "calming reflex".
Babies who get lots of rhythmic stimulation are much better able to
handle the intermittent, chaotic stimulation of your home.
A special thanks to the organizers of Lacnet and all the Lacnetters
around the world...thank you for letting me be part of your
forum...Happy Holidays!!
Harvey
