Beloved Listmembers,
Lynn Shea's post that mentioned wet nurses reminded me
of a lovely man, a baby's grandpa, that I met at work
last week.
Family had a lot of questions about *how long* to
breastfeed, so I started with the basic "breastmilk
only for first 6 months". Then Grandfather piped up,
"I wonder about these women who nurse at a year, two
years...the children don't get anything from it."
Whee ha! Then out came a discussion on worldwide
BFing practices, average age of weaning worldwide,
etc., a la Kathy Dettwyler. I *love* it when
opportunities like this arise!!
Then Grandfather, who was in his 70's, told me about a
man he had met some years before from "the old
neighborhood". The man approached him and identified
himself as Grandfather's brother. Apparently, the man
had been desperately ill as an infant, and
Grandfather's mother had provided her own expressed
milk for him. It probably made the difference between
life and death for this man, and he had never
forgotten the gift of a caring and generous heart.
Just wanted to share this. Thought it was wonderful!
Carole
