Who did not find it predictable that the AAP's new proclamation about Vitamin
D supplementation would be used to make exclusive breastfeeding sound less
safe than formula feeding?
Now, Dr. Gartner and the other intelligent and responsible members of that
committee must devote considerable time and energy to make it clearer that
breast feeding WITHOUT Vitamin D supplementation is still tremendously (and
measurably) healthier than formula feeding WITH Vitamin D. And, that small
amounts of sunlight give an infant or adult sufficient vitamin D.
Please call the media.

I believe a similar principle can be employed as we discuss alcohol and
breastfeeding: Mothers who drink in moderation while breastfeeding are not
endangering their children and mothers who are immoderate in their alcohol
consumption (nursing or formula feeding) have health issues well outside of
the scope of this discussion.
Mothers who breastfeed can have a glass of wine or two or a beer or two
without resorting to algorithms and charts. The known benefits of
breastfeeding FAR exceed any possible detriment to alcohol (or sunlight)
exposure. (Drinking alcohol in any quantity also has known adverse social
and health consequences which far exceed any "trendy" semi-newsworthy cardiac
benefits.)
Different issues, similar principles.
