Hi all,
This is my first time posting to Lac-Net. I hope someone can help me with
my request. I am to do a inservice for the nurses at the hospital that I
work in. One of the biggest problems that I have is our nursing staff
telling mom "you don't have enough colostrum, so your baby should be
supplemented". Does anyone of you have any clever or interesting ideas on
how inservice on colostrum, in terms of volume, components etc? Also , is
there any research or information regarding the effect of that "big" bottle
of formula given to babies in the first couple of days, when small amounts
of colostum would be the norm. At our hospital, once a baby is given
formula and comes back to mom to breastfeed(colostrum)their babies seem
harder to settle at the breast, thus putting into place a viscious cycle in
which mom believes that her colostrum is not adequete and therefore babies
must receive more formula.
