Whoopee! Another JD IBCLC! We ought to form a subcaucus ....
How far a drive is it from "central NJ" to Philadelphia? I'd tell you to
join and ATTEND your local ILCA affiliate meeting. You will get to know
other LCs in your area; can learn from them in a non-competitive and sharing
environment; can ask questions without fear. PRO-LC (Pennsylvania Resource
Organization for Lactation Consultants) is my ILCA affiliate, in SE PA. NO,
you don't have to be a PA LC to join. But we have lots of bang-up
presentations, and a wealth of mentor-types.
Also, opening mid-February 2003 in Glenside, PA (right outside Phila. and
near a PA Turnpike exit) is the Breastfeeding Resource Center, a non-profit
lactation center that -- amongst other things -- is designed to provide
on-site clinical education and training for IBCLCs (and IBCLC-wannabes).
Lastly, don't rush to fill the void, if you have a 4-year-old. I got this
sage advice a handful of years ago (when my kids were also much closer to 4
years of age). Practicing as an IBCLC has a way of eating into your time
(if you're doing it right).
Liz Brooks, JD, IBCLC
Wyndmoor, PA, USA
