Years ago, a client of mine who has since retired from Seattle’s
Harborview Hospital hematology lab told me of an
incident with her female Indian (from Asia) co-worker who collapsed on
her feet at work. She was admitted and a
blood work up done. Her B12 status was non-existant. She was a vegan
and ate exactly as she did in her native
India. However, the difference was the cleanliness of our food. In
India the rice is negligibly contaminated with
some insects. Just by ingesting these in her cooked rice, she never
developed B12 deficiency.
Here in the US, the rice she bought was too clean—no bugs and no B12
from animal (insect) source.
