With my second child, I nursed exclusively. I began taking the Progestin-
only pill at six weeks postpartum. I did not menstruate until my daughter
was fifteen months old, at which time I returned to a normal ovulatory and
menstrual cycle. I did not experience the decreased milk supply that it
seems most women do.
Because the Progestin-only pill contains the same amount of hormone for
every day (no placebo week as with the regular BCP), it does not induce
menstruation. From what I understand, the mini-pill only affects
fertility in that it thickens the cervical mucus to prevent sperm from
entering. It does not regulate the menstrual cycle as the estrogen pill
does.
I am sharing this as personal experience, not as information that I
personally would share in counseling clients. I just wanted to share that
I experienced LAM even while on the mini-pill so that it can be recognized
as one of the normal patterns. (I want to add that I have no known
medical conditions and have experienced normal fertility throughout my
life.)
