As Jackie Wolf points out:
"Doctors stopped learning about lactation physiology, breastfeeding
management, and the
importance of human milk to human health in medical school more than 80
years ago. Until we make human lactation part of the medical school
curriculum, we will keep on producing doctors ignorant about human
lactation. And until we can provide that training, we won't even have the
faculty in medical schools capable of training medical students about human
lactation."

Surely I am not the only one who finds it ironic, at best, that the group
who continue to occupy the role of 'experts' on child health, are so
uneducated about something so basic to the very thing they are experts on.
I think part of it is the medical paradigm of omnipotence and omniscience:
how can a doctor gracefully admit to having no knowledge on this and still
call her/himself a doctor? It puts us all, doctors and mothers and babies,
in an impossibly locked position.
It isn't just pediatricians. Hardly any doctors here really know how to
assess maternal BF problems, yet I must refer to doctors when I run across a
woman who needs a prescription for such a problem.
Midwives where I live aren't a lot better, as a group, and don't even get me
started on health visitors (PHNs).
