Sharon writes about a mom who is doing the whole exhausting regimen for
treating "yeast" (including boiling everything. Mom has no pain while
pumping but her nipples get progressively more sore when baby nurses. It's
prob. not yeast, or not yeast anymore. A woman with yeast will have pain
during pumping, too, until the infection begins to respond to appropriate
tx. I'm assuming that any bacterial infection that could have contaminated
nipple cracks has also been addressed. If it has, then pain that results
from direct breastfeeding is more likely to be caused by mechanical trauma.
Mechanical trauma can irritate the sensitive nipple nerve endings, causing
intense pain that can radiate into the breasts producing the "deep breast
pain" that many think can only be caused by "yeast". There may still be
something wrong with the latch. Try a more asymmetric latch. It's hard to
describe this in words, although there are many good tries in the Archives.
Kay Hoover and I have pictures of this in The Breastfeeding Atlas, and some
of thoses photos are on-line on the Medela website. Take a look at some
photos of asymmetric latch. Read Mary Renfrew and Chloe Fisher's book,
Bestfeeding, or watch Chloe's latch-on videos for some ideas on re-thinking
latch techniques. Check to make sure baby isn't tongue-tied. Sometimes a
very high palate can make it difficult for the baby to comfortably position
the nipple in the mouth.
