Thank you all for your responses regarding Zachary.
The baby was Dx with Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID). Wednesday
we find out if his big brother is an exact match for a bone marrow
transplant within the next week. Zac has the para influenza virus and
this has to be cleared before the transplant. He loves to breastfeed
and we have been initially pumping to get milk flowing so he isn't using
energy not getting milk and mum uses the lactation aid sometimes with
milk pumped after feedings. Zac is smart and doesn't like tubes in his
mouth, he has had a lot of suctioning and seems sensitive to this. Mum
is sleeping with him in a bed STS in the hospital isolation room. The
family is pretty burnt out, but breastfeeding is mums gift from heaven
to Zachary. I would love to find the article on Lactoengineering to give
to the hospital they are very open in this case. I will check again the
archives. Their immumologist is 8 months pregnant and a very strong
believer in breastfeeding. I saw the family on Friday when I went to
the hospital and Zachary was breathing much better and looked much
better - he was actually smiling and playing with his mum which he
hadn't done before because he was always having a hard time just
breathing. This is a very rare disorder and can you believe it Zachary
is the second baby in the hospital with the disorder the other baby is 5
months old and not breastfeeding, sad. I will keep you updated.
Carole
