I'm trying to catch up on Lactnet that I missed while on vacation. (So
glad that the archives can not be looked at chronologically so one can
follow a thread when catching up.) As a result, this topic may well be
past, but couldn't help but toss this comment in.
Regarding the baby that had lost 150 g and the doc was threatening
supplementation if baby didn't start gaining "immediately" - can't help
but wonder--If the baby was a formula fed baby and wasn't gaining, what
would he suggest doing? Supplement with breast milk?
On several occasions at the hospital, when I overhear that a formula
baby shows no interest in eating (especially in the first 24 hours), I
have said, "What are they going to supplement with-breastmilk?"
(because the usual comment with a breastfed baby is to supplement with
formula) It has caused a couple nurses to think about whether the
eagereness to supplement a breastfed baby in similar circumstances is
really appropriate!
