Both my grandmothers got into the work force briefly while both my grandfathers were pulling overseas duty.  They both had children around that same time too. 

I was told that both of them ( in different Southern US states) were given shots to 'dry up their milk' so that they could let others care for the baby.  It was not presented as an option, it was just done.

They both used relatives and no structured care.
