Has the baby seen a speech therapist with sucking expertise? OR an
occupational or physical therapist with the same? I have seen a few
babies who elevate their posterior tongue so hard against the nipple
that they did severe damage. What finally helped was to fingerfeed with
increased pressure against the posterior tongue every time the baby
tried to raise it. It took one little girl about 2 weeks to "get it".

Can mom have unusually friable skin due to a genetic disorder
(epidermolysis bullosa or pemphigus come to mind as examples)? These
can be variably penetrant and therefore be of variable severity.

I would bet the farm that the baby is doing something really wrong
during sucking. If scrupulous asymmetrical latch does not help, then
I'd definately have someone who is skilled look at the baby's sucking
skills.
