Jennifer Tieman raises a good question about "recommending" co-sleeping. I
find myself hesitating as well when faced with the sorts of situations she
mentioned. I usually mention it, but don't push it; I usually encourage the
mother to read the research on co-sleeping. I definitely---when the situation
strongly calls for it---plant the seed that it is normal and part of how we
evolved (successfully, for the most part!). At my breastfeeding classes, I
hand out (among other, breastfeeding-pertinent literature) a James McKenna
article on co-sleeping called, "Rethinking Infant Sleep." I also have
recommended Deborah Jackson's "Three in a Bed," which, in my opinion, is
better than the more-renowned Time Thevenin's "The Family Bed." Jackson's
book cites many more studies and current literature than Thevenin's...I also
mention "Our Babies, Ourselves." I basically plant the seed, but encourage
them to cultivate it.
But with all the "horrible" results in the studies on the risks of
co-sleeping, I worry, too. A true dilemma...
