Dear Catherine,
Thank you for your response. From what mom described, this baby *seemed* to
be having adequate output. She knew the signs to look for while baby nursed
(swallowing sounds, etc), which he was apparently doing well , once he was
latched properly. I think the waking him every 2 hrs to feed is a good
preventative measure (provided he IS drinking, obviously), and I hope that
by Monday this baby will show satisfactory weight gain. I agree with you
that 2 soiled diapers per day in a 2 wk old is not, in and of itself, a good
reason to feel confident that this baby is producing well. Many babies do
poorly in conjunction with exhibiting this type of output, while others are
thriving beautifully (take my 4 fast-gaining infants, for example). However,
from what I gathered, this baby is latching & drinking, then falling asleep,
for which mom IS using breast compression. Maybe what we really have here is
a non-demanding infant who's nutritional needs, as a result, are not being
met.
All in all, I felt the Ped fed mom misinformation on pumping, and failed to
use good judgement when jumping to solve the presumed problem with formula.
I don't understand why he didn't think to *observe* the baby breastfeed
before resorting to immediate conclusions and an assumed diagnosis. Too bad.
Anyway, thank you again for your response.
Megan Allen
