Maybe 5 or 6 years ago I spoke with Michael Zinaman about a client who'd
been told to wean because of thinning bones. Dr Zinaman, who's done
research on the issue, commented that there aren't enough data at this point
to give a normal range for bone density in young women. The comment really
stuck with me: that much of what's stated as fact may just be a guess. And
as others have pointed out, there's a rebound effect afterwards. There was
a sense at the time (don't know if it's changed) that remineralization was
most effective *during* weaning, so that a l-o-n-g tapering off period -
months or years of continued bfing *after periods have returned* - is
valuable to mom's bones.
