BINGO! Jan! In this discussion of crying and that it must be from
something painful for the baby, I was assuming the people who have brought
this up were talking about a medical problem with the baby.
What Jan wrote and what I tell parents is that babies cry for many reasons
including fear, anxiety and the lack of human contact. I do not consider
these to be physical pain, mental pain, but not physical. So using the 5 S's
would help for these causes.
I agree that the swaddling does not have to have the baby's hands pinned to
their sides. What I also want to bring up with this subject is that
breastfeeding helps to relieve pain (check out Bobbi Phillips latest study)
and therefore the parents should be encouraged to use breastfeeding to help
comfort the baby.
I have learned that babies exhibit different behaviors depending on where and
what the pain is they are experiencing. When the pain is in the lower
abdomen, such as colic, the baby will pull up their knees while crying and
tend to make tight fists. When the pain is in the chest, such as reflux or
GERD, the baby will arch back while crying and tense their bodies.
Is this information correct?
I think that a very through history needs to be taken before jumping into
diagnosis and treatments. So the first steps are to make sure the baby's
basic needs are being met before jumping on mom's diet or start tests on the
baby.
