Dear Cindi,
I have worked with several babies who just don't seem to do well with
supplementing using the SNS. Though this is what I usually use first. One
baby was an adoptive baby who had possible brain damage due to his mothers
drug use and just didn't suck well with anything. Another had Downs
syndrome. Both moms tried the SNS and both described behaviors similar to
what you describe with your baby. When we tried the LactAid, the babies did
much better and went on to nurse a long time - eventually without the
LactAid. You can look it up online to see a picture and how it works. Sounds
like the baby might need to work with an OT as well. One baby was also very
sleepy, never cried, when we finally got enough calories in him, using the
LactAid he woke up and began to give feeding cues and stay awake much more.
He went to an OT and by 16 weeks had greatly improved. He was 12 weeks when
I first saw him and had not gained weight in over a month.
Warmly, Judith Markham IBCLC
