Julie,
Ye, I very recnetly had a woman just like this - nipples extremly sensitive for over 15 years, so much so that her husband could not even touch them. She also had a lengthy history of her nipples scabbing and tearing repeastedly, for no reason, since she was a teenager.
This mother went home breastfeeding normally from the hospital, but soon she began having painful, torn nipples. We tried APNO cream and the dermatologist had her using a hydrocortisone cream as well.Nothing worked. She did go to a shield, as a last resort, which she used for about 6 weeks. At one point, she was pumping with a Lactina over the nipple shields! She came to visit me 2 weeks ago to report that she is exclusively breastfeeding without the shield, no problems!
