Hi All,
Wanted to let you in on a fun update that I got on Friday. I'll give you
the details of how this came about:

I got a call last Friday (25th) from an autie of a 16 yr old mom who was
experiencing some troubles BF. Mainly, she was sent home with a baby who
was latching well, but a milk supply that was coming in with a vengance and
a baby acting normally given the circumstances. She was told to NOT use the
pump she was sent home with to pump off any milk to make herself comfortable
(because it wold make more milk) if she were going to nurse and to only pump
for about 5 minutes if she were going to bot feed EBM - to not drain the
breast. This is what she and her Auntie heard anyway... Also, there were
many family members in the house and ALL wanted to feed the baby - now baby
has had mainly bottles of expressed milk for 3 days. Mom distressed,
uncomfortable, full, pumping, no time with baby. etc. So, they call Jaye.

With mom (16 yrs old) and Auntie on the phone (but speaking to mom) I
corrected the info about pumping - told mom to pump just enough to be comfy
if baby was not ready to nurse. This way, she doesn't increase her supply
but does save herself from possible plugged ducts and mastitis. Mom is
thrilled! When putting baby to breast, if the breast is really full, pump
just enough to soften areola so baby can latch. Mom is told that she is
giving herself and baby a great gift by BF and that the milk supply will
settle down to match baby's needs in time - just hang in there. Then, I
ask mom, "Sweetie - whose baby is this?" Mom, "Mine." J, "Whose privilage
is it to feed your baby?" Mom, "Mine?" J, "Yeah! You carried her, you
birthed her, why are all these other people feeding YOUR baby while you sit
there with that darn pump?" Mom (to Auntie), "Yeah? Why am I doing that?"
Auntie,"Good question! It is your privilage - you are her mom. I'll help
you take care of that!" Auntie to me, "Thanks for reminding us of that.
If she is old enough to have the baby she is old enough to care for her and
it is her right to do that as a mom!"

So, I give all the basics of what to watch for, input=output, positioning,
etc., answer their other questions and make sure they have all they need and
tell them they can call me any time they need to. I tell them that, because
she is a teen mom and I have btdt, I am happy to offer a comp consult if she
needs it. They are thrilled (money is an issue!)

This past Friday (Nov 1) I call to check in. Baby is now refusing bottles,
BF is going beautifully, they are going through diapers like crazy, mom is
thrilled, Auntie is thrilled that mom is doing so well, the family was a bit
put off about not being able to feed the baby until Auntie set them straight
(gently) about whose baby it was. Mom tells me that it is all because of
me - I tell her, "No, I just gave you the tools. You had to use them." She
says, "But you treated me with respect - not like a kid who really messed
up. Thank you."

My pleasure...btw, I call most of my moms "sweetie" - even if they are 40...

Happy happy happy today...

Jaye
who also did a comp visit for a 19 yr old mom in a similar situation who is
also doing great!
