Laurie, I tried putting "postpartum depression evaluation" into Google and
came up with many useful links right away, including a positive PubMed
evaluation of the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS): "The
incidence of postpartum depression detection with the Edinburgh Postnatal
Depression Scale was significantly higher than the incidence of spontaneous
detection during routine clinical evaluation (35.4% and 6.3%, respectively;
P =.001)."
Putting the scale name into Google will then lead you to a description of
the scale itself, which is a simple 10 item self-administered questionnaire.
This tool is used locally here by public health (who see all moms rich and
poor, not just low income moms.)
