I got a call from a friend today - Baby is 5 days old.

She was sent home with nipple shields which she is using - no flat nipples,
no soreness, baby latches well without it. She is not clear on why she is
using them or why they were given to her.

She also was told at discharge to supplement 1/2 to 1 oz of formula q feed
by the ped until her milk comes in "because the baby has lost a little
weight since birth". And this from a hospital with a stong lactation
program...

I have a copy of Dr. Newmans book on my desk which I will be taking to her
this afternoon. <sigh>
