Someone posted yesterday or the day before that her new grandchild appears to
have tongue tie that may be interfering to some extent with enjoyable BF.
Baby's mother is a pedi and apparently not open to frenotomy.
Guess I'm wondering why this pedi mom feels this way after neonatologist
Ballard's new research report in Pediatrics re: BF outcomes after frenotomy.
(Ballard JL, Auer CE & Khoury JC [2002]. Ankyloglossia: assessment, incidence, and
effect of frenuloplasty on the breastfeeding dyad. Pediatrics. 110(5), e63.)
It isn't JUST about the breastfeeding. These children are significantly more
likely to develop articulation difficulties and chewing/swallowing
difficulties that can nagatively impact "quality" of life. Why wait until frenotomy would
be a bloody, messy procedure (that may progress to need for frenectomy) when
doing it in early infancy is usually bloodless, quick and requires no
anesthetic?
