Does anyone know if you need a consent form for the mother to sign when you begin to use a nipple shield for the premie in the NICU? Or do you just need one if the premie is going home breastfeeding via the nipple shield.
Of the NICU's I called, only one NICU I visited here in California uses the consent form, others (about 5) does not use the consent form and are not worried about liability because of the recent studies from Paula Meier.
Therefore, these Lactation Consultants let their babies go home using a nipple shield with no consent.
I need to know the correct way, because our NICU is opening up a breastfeeding center and will be doing outpatient lactation consults for those premies that really never do get on the breast, etc.
Any thoughts?
thankx
