Dear Kathleen:
I searched the LLLI Leader Specialty File and did not find the keyword
"paraplegic" listed. However, other maternal health issues included:
arthritis, cardiac problems, carpal tunnel syndrome, Epstein Barr,
Fibromyalgia, hospitalization, Lupus, and surgery. Breastfeeding with such
conditions may have some overlap with the mother's experience. For example,
mothers who cope with fatigue, pain, and muscle weakness may not be able to
use their arms well or at all. The compensatory techniques that they have
developed might of use to a paraplegic mother or might generate ideas of
what might help her. So one option is to contact a local LLL Leader and ask
her to access the Leader Specialty File, looking for a Leader who has
personal or professional experiences with such situations.
Also, one of my favorite, if very outdated, breastfeeding books is "You can
breastfeed your baby...even in special situations" by Dorothy Patricia
Brewster (Rodale Press 1979). I didn't find paraplegic listed in the index.
But I like its can-do attitude and the stories of real mothers who made
breastfeeding work in all kinds of circumstances. It encourages creativity
and thinking "outside the box." You or the mother might be able to borrow
it from a library. Remember, though, lots of information in it is out of
date!
Best wishes to the mother and baby,
Cynthia
