I think whether we use hands on or hands off depends to a great deal on our
background before entering the lactation field. For people like myself with
a background in 'hands on' professions such as nursing and midwifery, the
challenge can be NOT to touch. As I understand it, many lay breastfeeding
counsellors are taught not to touch, and so it may be harder for them TO
touch. Personally, I have been known to actually SIT on my hands (I'm not
kidding) to resist the urge to 'fix' things, and even then I've now learnt
to ask permission before I touch a breast, something I wasn't doing before
