LuAnn wrote in about a baby not back to birthweight by
one week of age, and a ped who told the mother it
could be related to her laxative use...
The facility where I work instructs parents that baby
should be back to birthweight by 10 days to 2 weeks of
age. For a baby to be back to birthweight at one week
old is unrealistic, IMHO, especially if Mom's milk
supply came in more toward postbirth day #5, which is
still within a *normal range*. How much weight did
the baby lose? A loss of 7-8% of birthweight is
acceptable in the first week of life.
With all due respect to the ped, blaming the laxatives
for whay may be a *normal* newborn growth pattern
sounds like blather.
