Please allow me to rant!!
I just got off the phone with a mother who took her
baby for her 2 week check up. BW 7# 8oz. and wt today
8# 3 oz. Great, right? No. Baby nurses both breasts
ad lib, usually q 2-3 hrs. Mom stops baby and moves
to 2nd breast after 15-20 mins. Has 12-15 mustard
yellow, although "watery" stools. Not gassy, not
fussy. Ped take a stool sample and tells mom that her
milk has too much lactose and to start using soy
formula, at least every other feeding! Then schedules
next check up for 2 months! I guess formula fixes
everything.
Luckily, this is mom's 2nd baby and she called me
first before just "following Dr's orders." Mother
doesn't think baby really has a problem, at least not
enough of one to start formula. I recommended that
she offer only 1 breast per feed for the next 24-48
hrs and see if there are any changes. I explained
about hindmilk/foremilk,etc.
It just burns me up at the cavalier attitude of some
peds toward bfing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for letting me rant.
Warmly, (no,actually quite hot at the moment)
