Unfortunately, nothing new.  I can remember seeing this in the late 70's
when I was a student.
Even in the last five years, I have seen this with older nurses.  It is one
of those "tricks" that gets the baby sucking on something and makes the
nurse feel successful.  I don't think the nurse that suggests this
understands the ramifications.  Good luck in your education of her....
