Hello, I have a quick question regarding pacifiers & pre-term infants.
Please bear with me if this is a stupid question as I am just getting
started with my clinical time.
I had a mom in one of my infant massage classes tell me that she was
instructed to give her pre-mature son (who was realeased after 10 days in
NICU) a pacifier to strengthen his suck.
I can understand that concept however, couldn't it affect his ability to
successfully suck at the breast since he is used to sucking on the
pacifier? Can't a baby practice or comfort suck on mom to get stonger?
Every time this baby displayed feeding or comfort cues mom shoved the
pacifier in his mouth until after class!
Thanks for reading!
Shannon
