I brought this up last week...... after the questions raised here after
posting it, I emailed a doctor at University of Virginia Medical Center who
does a lot of research with SIDS and this is his reply :
"I'm afraid I don't have any information on swaddling, but the issue has
been raised fairly frequently so I guess I should re-review the literature.
I'll let you know if I find out anything of value. It's of interest that the
Asian cultures have low SIDS rates and also swaddle. But they also would
never place a baby prone or on his/her side for sleep."
John Kattwinkel, M.D.
Professor of Pediatrics
University of Virginia
I have not had a chance to talk to the pediatrician that actually told me
this yet, but when I see her I will ask her, but Dr. Kattwinkel is an expert
on the topic, for those of you that are also nurses he has helped develop
and continues to revise a course called PCEP - Perinatal Continuing
Education Program.
