Hi Trish,
According to the Breastfeeding Answer Book page 564 "USP modified lanolin
does not need to be removed before nursing. However, it is important to know
that there are many refinements of modified lanolin and that some
formulations contain higher levels of pesticides, free lanolin alcohols, and
detergents, the components that have been identified as the cause of lanolin
allergy." It goes on to say that that lanolin use was discouraged because of
skin sensistivity and the high levels of pesticides baby could ingest. In
1992, the USP set a minimum standard of purity for lanolin used by nursing
moms. Most companies who now sell "USP modified lanolin" meet these
standard. Lansinoh is the product of choice because it is considerably purer
than the minimum acceptableUSP standards. The ref is Clark, E. et al.
Lanolin of reduced sensitizing potential. "Contact Dermatitis"1981 80-83.
I hope this helps!
Best Regards
Donna
