I too have assisted women who report this phenomenon. Like Lisa's mother
the most recent one I can recall is a midwife who had a home birth. She
did everything that makes for the perfect start to breastfeeding and had to
begin complementing her first baby at 3month - herbal galactagogues didn't
work for her either.
Second baby exactly the same story, except I suggested domperidone this
time and it worked a treat - she's still sending me Christmas cards.
:-) What was different? Only the boost to prolactin levels - perhaps her
levels had dropped to sub-normal.
It would be really interesting to follow prolactin levels in women who have
a history like this.
Perhaps the original poster who is assisting the paediatrician who has this
problem could suggest this to her - ie check prolactin levels before
pregnancy, during, just after birth and then routinely every couple of
weeks before a feed and half an hour after a feed. It would be really good
to get data like this.
