I agree- I don't think that babies are born hungry. On the contrary, they
are born well nourished and well hydrated. I'm sure many of us have
encountered a parallel situation many times where moms decide baby MUST
be hungry because he took a bottle after nursing. The way I explain it is
that babies like to suck. Some babies have very high sucking needs and
others have more moderate sucking needs. For a baby with a higher sucking
need, he will typically suck whatever you give him, be it a breast, a
bottle, a pacifier or a finger. If you give a baby a bottle, he has no
choice of whether or not he gets loads of milk- he'll get it regardless.
So one really can't determine whether or not a baby is hungry based on
giving a bottle. When baby suckles at the breast, a change in sucking
pattern also changes the flow of milk. A "flutter suck" will not
stimulate a letdown in the same way a slow, and more intense suck does.
Hope that makes sense.

Sandy Hankin (whose pet peeve is hearing stories of hospital personnel
insisting on giving baby bottle because he was "so big that he needed
something". ARGH!)
