Dear Lactnet,
I have been hiding out and reading lactnet for some time now. I
feel as if I know some of you personally, but no one knows me so
here is a brief intro. I certified as an IBCLC in 2001. I have
been an LLLL for about 12 years and have been a birth partner for
about three years. I have five daughters, all born at home and
all breastfed. My youngest is seven, and I am just feeling like
it is time to move back out into the world again. I have been
transformed, as often happens, by the experience of immersing
myself in mothering my daughters.
I recently suggested to an MD friend of mine that I would love to
do a breastfeeding clinic at her practice, a family practice
clinic with four family docs who provide complete care and
various other care providers. They are a pretty good evidence
based practice, but their breastfeeding stats are not great. My
friend called me a few days ago and told me she was going to
include my idea under her program of alternative and
complimentary medical care. I can have one half day per week!
Now I feel slightly panicked. Does anyone have any good
organizational ideas for me? Things like paperwork and charting,
equipment and supplies I might need, things of that nature. I am
thinking I would need to schedule at least 45 minutes to an hour
for each visit-- does that sound accurate? I will need to use my
own equipment and supplies, so I'll need to purchase some-- like
nipple shields, breast shells, SNS etc. Any suggestions on how
many? What have other people needed most in their practices? I
am planning on providing these items at cost to people who need
them. I am also thinking that I would like to have some pumps to
rent at cost on a short term basis. Does anyone have experience
with this? I don't really want to be a rental station because we
already have several here, and I don't want to feel like a
salesperson.
Any ideas and encouraging words will be appreciated. This is a
first foray into this professional world and I want to do it
right. I have a meeting about this in one week.
Thanks in advance!
Warmly, Karolyn Wilson in Santa Fe, NM, USA
