I've been a lactnet subscriber for years, but have rarely posted to the
list. I work on the Navajo reservation, and am new to the OB unit at this
particular hospital. The hospital is partially funded by the federal
government, so they try to cut costs by using generics. They give most
mothers (much to my objection) a large tube of generic hydrous lanolin.
This lanolin looks nothing like purelan or lansinoh. It is thick, tacky,
and an opaque greenish yellow. I know that topicals are absorbed quickly
into the skin, but wonder if this is an appropriate formulation for
breastfeeding couplets. I suspect it is not purified, and wonder why it is
opaque instead of clear like the above mentioned brands. I have talked to
several of the staff about it probably not being an appropriate
formulation, but one of the midwives asked me for documentation to support
this. Can anyone help now that I've put my foot in my mouth?!
Thanks!
