It is unbelievable to me that all her health care providers would treat a a
mother with a family hx of premenopausal breast cancer so casually. All
persistent masses should be examined whether or not a mother is
breastfeeding. 1-3% of breast cancers occur during lactation. They are as
treatable as other tumors when caught early, but delays can be fatal, as
I've personally observed in several sad cases. Ultrasound is a non-invasive
method to get a look at a breast lump during lactation. Needle biospy, or
full biopsy can be performed during lactation. There is plenty of available
literature about this in any good, standard lactation text, as well as in
the cancer lit. If the mother is being treated by physicians who can't
manage her situation, she needs to go to a regional center and have this
examined. Her family needs her.
