I second everything Cynthia said. I also have exclusively breastfed a child
with severe allergies for an extended time. I have been breastfeeding
children with multiple food allergies for over 5 years. It's a challenge.
However, it's a great learning experience and it's do-able.
I also second what Harvey said. A simple diet challenge is always a good
idea. I would suggest that the mom try only one thing at a time - probably
soy first. So have something with a tiny bit of soy in it. Then if after
about a week, things are fine then try again or try a cow's milk product.
But always allow at least a week to see a reaction. (You'd hate to try soy
and cow at times where their reactions might overlap and not know which food
caused the reaction.) Hives are immediate, digestive reactions can be slower
as something like constipation might not be evident for a couple days. Also,
in my experience, if she's OK with soy for instance, don't go crazy over it.
I've seen children who can tolerate their mom having say a soy yogurt once a
week but no more. The Mom can cautiously figure out how much their baby can
tolerate.
