Hi Peg,
There are many natural therapies that may help to lower cholesterol. I would
suggest that this mother seek out a breastfeeding- knowledgeable naturopath
to help her find breastfeeding compatible therapies.
Prescription for Nutritional Healing, 2nd Ed. by James F. Balch, MD, Phyllis
A. Balch, CNC lists a number of possibilities including: apple pectin, which
lowers cholesterol levels by binding fats and heavy metals, chromium
picolinate which lowers total cholesterol levels and improves HDL-LDL ratio,
garlic which helps lower cholesterol, lecithin granules or capsules, a fat
emulsifier which lowers cholesterol.
A quick google search also turned up these sites on natural therapies for
high cholesterol:

Given the study published in the September issue of Pediatrics showing that
adults who were breast-fed as infants had lower cholesterol levels than their
peers who were fed formula, (Pediatrics 2002;110:597-608) it seems to me that
continued breastfeeding would be especially important for this baby's future
health.
