I wonder if any of you wise ones have some advice for how to deal with an
attitude I've seen several times lately. I've had several pregnant moms who
respond to my question about feeding method for baby, with nearly horror at
the thought of breastfeeding. One mom told me "There is no possible way I
could do that, I can't even stand the thought" all while shuddering and
looking nauseated. One mom's last baby was a 31-week premie. she said they
encouraged her to breastfeed in the hospital last time, and she so didn't
want to that she cried for 3 days after he was born. She said that the
nurses encouraging her to breastfeed ruined her hospital stay and made her
miserable. She said "And I DON'T want that to happen again." Meaning that
I should never bring up breastfeeding again.
Any ideas on what leads to such an aversion? Any ideas on any encouraging
these ladies without driving them crazy?
I asked one mother if there was 1 formula that provided all the benefits of
breastmilk, if she would buy it for her baby. She said "Only if it came in
a can."
A sad commentary on the state of our society that some women view such a
natural body function with such aversion.
I'd appreciate any comments/advice.
