good question. are you saying no pumping for 2-3 weeks, or breastfeeding,
pumping, and supplementation, with only the first few days no little or no
breast stimulation? at the ILCA regional conference in march, in berkeley,
CA, Debra Busta Moore presented on maintaining a milk supply when baby is
not breastfeeding. She presented research on preterm infants by Hill,
Aldag, and Chatterton, JHL 17(1), 9-13 2001. The chart in my syllabus
indicates that in an evaluation of 39 mothers with preterm infants, there
was a significantly higher milk volume with high frequency pumping than
with low frequency (to be expected, i'd say), but, perhaps surprisingly,
there was no significant difference between early initiation of pumping and
late initiation (defined as > or < 48 hours). There was *significantly*
less milk from mothers who initiated late AND had low frequency of expression.
the numbers were as follows:
early initiation/low frequency 9: 526.8 grams+/- 356.5
early initiation/high frequency: 617.4 grams +/- 289.7
late initiation/low frequency: 180.7 grams +/- 116.7
late initiation/high frequency: 656.2 grams +/- 399.2
i thought this was very interesting . . .
i don't know the answer to the question about timing of iretreavable
involution if *NO* pumping is done for 2-3 WEEKS. i look forward to
hearing other thoughts on that.
