It occurs to me that we can't repeat often enough the
importance of not referring to our favorite bodily
functions (birth, breastfeeding, breathing, please
insert your own favorite bodily function here...) as
"advantageous" activities or outcomes while inhabiting
our physical bodies.
An advantage to talking about the advantages of
breastfeeding to a mother support group might be that
some mothers will find it handy in adopting a meek
attitude when discussing modern feeding options with
pregnant friends. This seems more of an advantage to
Ross and Mead Johnson than to newborn babies.
The importance of talking about the importance of
breastfeeding with new and expectant mothers is that
women will be empowered to expect their bodies to work
for them and to nourish their children mind, heart,
and soul. This is important to children, to families,
to women.
Stepping off my soap-box & hoping not to slip,
Susan Johnson MFA, IBCLC
